Nelspruit, from farming town to the provincial capitol of the Mpumalanga. From meager beginnings to a booming centre of industry and economic growth. SInce its inception as the capital in 1995, this former farming community has really taken off.
Mpumalanga (Place where the sun rises) is serviced by an excellent road system which means that it is totally accessible to tourists. It is also well served by a number of smaller airports.

Nelspruit lies in the hot lowveld valley of the Crocodile River. It's sub-tropical climate and soil is perfectly suited for citrus fruits, bananas, mangoes, pears, avocado, tobacco, coffee litchis, pawpaw and pecan nuts. The area produces about a third of the total of the se products for the whole country.
Nelspruit itself is a fairly large city, but still a pleasant environment to live in, with rich areas of natural bush in abundance and lilac jacaranda and purple bougainvilla as well as other shrubs lining the roads.
It forms a rail and road link between Pretoria and Johannesburg to Maputo and to the Panorama Route and Kruger National Park.
Nelspruit has now been renamed to Mbombela - meaning Lots of people together in a small place.

While Nelspruit is the province's legislative capital, Witbank is the centre of the coal mining industry, Piet Retief is a large production area for tropical fruit and sugar and Standerton is renowned for its large dairy industry. Sabie is right at the heart of the forestry industry. The 'green gold' of Sabie and Graskop together provides a large part of South Africa's total requirement for forestry products.
The forestry plantations cover vast areas and offers ideal eco tourism opportunities. Wonderful hiking trials, breathtaking waterfalls, patches of indigenous forest and a wide variety of nature reserves are all on offer to the tourist.
The Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve is the biggest of these reserves, from where you can take in breathtaking vistas from the very aptly named God's Window. Badplaas offers mineral Springs, while Chrissiesmeer is the largest natural freshwater lake in SA, made famous by a huge variety of aquatic birds and also very well known for it's flamingos. At the Sudwala Caves you will be able to view the oldest dolomite caves in the world.
This beautiful corner of South Africa offers the tourist a destination with enormous potential, where they can partake in activities such as mountain biking, quad biking, microlight flights, paragliding, cultural tours and of course, some of the best game viewing opportunities on offer.
